Collecting Good Souls
As photographers, it's always about the image and this story is no different. The story began chasing the soldier in this image, Army Sgt. Angelo Klonis. The image is titled "The Face" of WWII by legendary photojournalist W. Eugene Smith in 1944 that adorned the cover of LIFE book, World War II. Years after the war, Klonis opened a bar in Santa Fe, NM named Evangelo's which is operated by the hero's son Nick Klonis today.
My partner on this project, Jonathan Irish and I visited the bar and had a conversation with Nick about the photo and his dad. We met one of the regular patrons, Richie Rich who shared his stories about Angelo and Nick. And in all the stories we heard that evening at Evangelo's, we took Richie Rich's tribute to his family that served, and created the video below.
Special thanks to Jonathan Irish (Nat Geo photographer) , my partner on this project. If you want to find out more about Jonathan, he is currently visiting 59 parks in 52 weeks to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.
